Who We Are
We are the organizing team of UFCW 876, our local United Food and Commercial Workers Union. We believe in the power of people to change their situations when they stand together, and we believe there is significant change to be had so that Michigan workers can have the good jobs that they deserve.
We are a coalition of Michigan workers dedicated to improving workplace opportunities and standards for people across the state. Together with local community allies, Organize Michigan is achieving common sense change to improve workers' every day lives. The more we stand together, the stronger our voices will be in the workplace to gain the respect and dignity that we all deserve.
What We Have to Say -
"As a movement, all workers must continue to fight for our rights! If we do not, we will most certainly lose them. The political process really fires me up. If you don't take a stand, you'll fall for anything."
- Marylin Kelley
"It is everyone's right to have a fair and just agreement with their employer. A company should never have the sole right to dictate what our working conditions should be."
- Frank Poeschel
"My contract provides affordable health care for me and my family. There is no way I could afford to pay the medical bills for my three boys. "
- Rodney Lavender
Quotes from workers who have experienced the support of solidarity
"It's great to know someone is there to back you up."
- Stacey Roginski
"Union representation is very important in protecting workers' rights. Many younger workers don't understand that with no contract, you have no real rights. Management can fire you at will. I did this for the next generation."
- Penny Gibson
"Bargaining is an important part of my workplace. Without this mechanism, an employer could take advantage of its workforce. We need these protections as the economy is struggling.
- Melody Faulman
What We Do
With so much that needs to change to support Michigan's workforce, we approach our goals from many different angles.
YOU have the power to change your workplace.
Organize Michigan is committed to helping workers acquire the tools they need to gain a real voice at work. Organize Michigan members are learning how to organize their workplace through a series of worker-led workshops that focus on developing relationships and building power. Contact us to learn more about these workshops and the team that’s developing the content.
Fighting for common sense solutions
We're not asking for rocket ships, people.
Today, more than ever, workers are faced with harsh political agendas, company takeaways and corporate greed that prevents workers from getting the basic compensation they need to get by. Organize Michigan is working to push back against this anti-worker agenda by advocating for solutions to the issues that affect working people every day. Please visit our issues page to learn more about what we are fighting for.
Providing Resources to Working People
We're here to help YOU win.
From preparing for your first interview to planning for retirement and everything in between, navigating the complex world of modern day American corporations is difficult. Organize Michigan is supporting working people with a wide range of resources (online and in person!) to help workers build a path towards a good job, career security, financial stability, and professional advancement.
We are always stronger together.
We are stronger as a group than we are as individuals. Community-based organizations, unions, faith-based institutions, elected officials, and individual supporters work together with Organize Michigan to advocate for better employment opportunities and hold employers accountable for unjust treatment of workers. We are always looking to build our network of allies, so please contact us if you’re interested in standing with us to support working people in Michigan.
Strengthening Professional Networks
Connecting workers across the state.
Having positive professional relationships with individuals in your industry is an important aspect of your job. Organize Michigan is bringing workers together from across Michigan and is helping to bridge the gap between people who do the same job for different companies. We sponsor social events and hold regular meetings where people have an opportunity to share and learn from those who have similar work and experiences.
